I got the BBNow woes….

I was on the phone with BBNow to get my hourly update on the status of the outage occurring in my apartment complex. I was on hold waiting for the “next available representative” for about 15 minutes, which is not abnormal. Suddenly, a recorded voice comes on and begins speaking to me. This occurs often as well, so I didn’t even pay attention until some how, the words that she was speaking burrowed into my sub-conscious which kicked me in the back of the head and said, “LISTEN, STUPID… SHE’S SAYING SOMETHING NEW”.

“In order to offer continued support and a more timely response time our customer support center is now open from 7am to 12am Central Standard Time Monday through Saturday. Please leave a message after the tone or try your call again later…. BEEEEEEEEp.”

Are you kidding me?! What?!

Luckily for them, not more than five minutes later my pager went off. I wrote a small program to keep me updated on the state of my cable modem connection and it was informing me that the connection was back up.

Email is starting to pour in from all ends of the earth. Currently the machine on the other side of my Cable Modem is the primary MX for my domains. I would like to leave it that way as it is easier to administer. However, having a secondary MX located somewhere else would not be too bad of an idea. A good friend (joiseyguy) offered to run MX, HTTP, SMTP, IMAP and any other services I might need. (I appreciate everyone else who offered… you are all very generous).

The only question I have now is: how do I tell sendmail (no, changing mail servers is not an option, sendmail is what he runs) that if mail is destined for a particular domain to hold it until I some how tell it to deliver it to some other place? Or am I going about this the wrong way? I thought about having all the mail to my domain dropped into a standard mailbox… and then I could get it via POP or IMAP when connectivity was regained, but that means I would lose important envelope information that is not reliably reflected in the headers (i.e. what email address was this message headed to (for mailing lists and BCC’s)?) I also thought about just letting the mail sit there on that box and then regular SMTP would kick in and have the mail sent to me eventually…. but what if it takes me longer than a couple days/hours to get back online. I don’t want all the people who have sent me email to get “WARNING” and/or “ERROR” messages regarding their email to me.

Anyone have any insight or suggestions here? I have been reading online, and have come up with some information, but not enough to be sure what I should do next.
