down with the INS
July 6th, 2002Kara and her fiance, Hugo, are meeting with me for coffee this evening. The official reason for our meet is to discuss immigration options for Jess, though I'm sure we'll have plenty more to talk about.
She and Hugo conquered the United State's INS recently and acquired a K-1 Visa for Hugo allowing him immigrate to the United States, work in the United States, acquire an education in the United States, and legally marry Kara. He just arrived two days ago for good. Congratulations to them. I'm not exactly sure how long their application process took, but most accounts I have seen online range from 6-12 months, so I am sure it was a long process for them, especially since, when applying for a K-1, the potential immigrant is not allowed to enter the United States.
It has been said that the US's Immigration laws are bested in complexity only by its tax laws. Ugh.
Apparently there are quite a few LiveJournal users attempting to conquer this same process. Enough, in fact, that a community exists for K-1 couples. I'm not sure if K-1 is the route Jess and I will take, but it certainly is an option.
Kara and Hugo have more knowledge about this process than I do, having been through it, so I am grateful that they are willing to help me.
This proves to be an interesting evening. I'm not sure where we're going yet. Probably a coffee house. She's going to give me another call when they finish eating dinner.
