I have another place to write. A place where I feel a little bit safer only because I know fewer eyes are watching. A place where I rarely link to anyone else, and I don’t alway have a point to make or a thought to provoke. I’ve done pretty well with this separation so far. The only trouble I have is deciding how to sign my name when I comment somewhere else. Do I use “*revjim*” and link here, or do I use that name and link there?
I’m considering a third separation. A photography oriented space. A place where I can post photographs and talk about things related to photography. Unfortunately, photography often mixes with poetry and deep life-concerning thoughts. Additionally, talking about things related to photography is often technical in nature and might be useful for other geeks. So I’m not sure if the separation is a wise one.
I’d like to link all three personalities in to one another. Share the information from one place with the other places when it overlaps in purpose or classification. But, as it is now, in my other place, I don’t use the name “*revjim*”. It keeps the simplest of searches from returning pages in that other place. Linking them together would give it away, and defeat the purpose for separating it in the first place.
Additionally, I’d like to, somehow, use my real, birth-given name (no, my name’s not really “Jim”, though I am called that by many people) with information that holds any technical merit. The sole reason for not using my real name to begin with was primarily to keep my mother and my employer from landing here accidentally. If I can remove enough of the real me from these pages (and put it somewhere else) then my real name can appear here without fear of negative reaction from those persons I sought to hide this from in the beginning. Additionally, and outside of my control, a few people that work with me already know of this site. They don’t seem interested enough to read often or regularly, but they do visit on ocassion. At least, that’s what my logs tell me. So, as it is now, I can’t exactly write “I hate my boss” (which I don’t, by the way) in big bold letters on this page. I’m sure someone would notice.
So do I…
A) start a new site with my real name, and stick to topics of technical merit. Meanwhile, I’ll continue using my other site with a pseudonym for matters of a personal nature. Additonally, I’ll develop a third site for photographic pursuits. The name “*revjim*” will be dropped from all use.
B) convert “*revjim*” into a place for technical topics. I’ll remove all traces of “life” from its archives and state proudly in the “about” page that “*revjim*” is so-and-so with a full resume and photograph.
C) give up on the idea of ever using my real name. Most employers that I would ever work for don’t care about the fact that you have a personal website or the things you’ve done for the community anyway. Continue using my other site for matters of a personal nature, but have less fear about linking things from there to here. Post photographs in both places, depending on thier purpose.
D) get rid of all other sites, just have one site, post everything here and stop caring about who reads what or whether or not the “typical” reader of this site would even be interested in the topic of the content I choose to post.
What do you think?
