June 10th, 2004:

I wanna be a Reverend Jim Girl

I was talking to Jess about this last night and I’ve decided that I need to start taking more pictures of people: Portraits with Style, if you will. Not Olan Mills or JCPenny type stuff… my stuff. The stuff I like. I need girls and guys; young people and old people; small people and large people; individuals and groups; friends and strangers.

The problem is, I’ll never be any good if I don’t start doing it. And I’m afraid to start doing it if I’m not any good. So… I’m jumping in with both feet and we’ll see how it turns out.

What got me thinking about this was when “Morgan”:http://livejournal.com/~s1m0n/ mentioned in passing that she would love to fly out for a sunday shoot and be a “Scott Church”:http://livejournal.com/~scottchurch/ girl. And I immediately thought, “Why doesn’t she want to be a Reverend Jim Girl?” The answer came to me in two pieces. First of all, I’ve never really announced that I was actively seeking people to be “Reverend Jim Girls”. And secondly, he’s good; much better than me. What really topped it off, was browsing through “Lithium Picnic”:http://livejournal.com/~lithium_picnic/ and finding that “he photographed”:http://www.livejournal.com/community/lithium_picnic/26483.html the same model that “I once photographed”:http://photos.revjim.net/ps20030406/dsc_0346. My images of her weren’t “bad” and of course the circumstances of our shoots were much different, but, his was truly better. Which made me think, why can’t *I* do that, or at least try.

So… here I am, I’m trying.

Do you, or someone you know, want to be one of the first? (The first of what, I don’t know. Maybe just a long line of horrible photographs, or maybe a whole collection of images truly interesting to look at.) Of course, I can’t pay you. I will however, be able to offer you one or two 8×10 prints per hour that we shoot, the opportunity to purchase more at a very low price, and, of course, my gratitude. If you require something different as a means of compensation, let me know. Maybe we can work it out. Guys, girls, babies, groups, and couples welcome. Happy, fun, sexy, silly, dark, meaningful, and erotic ideas welcome. If these terms sound okay to you, read on.

A few things to know:

* Most photography sessons will occur on a weekend. Special arrangements can be made for special cases.
* If you’d like the images to be personal and reflect something about you, or if there’s a specific idea you have in mind, I’d prefer to be able to meet with you on a weeknight, sometime prior to the shoot, to go over ideas and get to know one another.
* If we don’t meet prior to the shoot, I’d like to see a few photographs of you so that I can consider what kind of images to put you in.
* These will not be Portrait Studio style images. While I’m happy to incorporate your ideas and personality into the images, they will be new, and exciting, and uncommon. At least, that’s the goal.
* Please don’t be camera shy. If you are camera shy, try to put it away for one day. Take a risk, as I am, and see what kind of results we get.
* Prior to the shoot, we will discuss, together, what clothing and make-up we will need.
* I might turn you down. If I have too many appointments, or if your ideas or your style don’t represent something that I need to work on (which at this point, doesn’t rule out too many), I may decline your offer. Please don’t take this as a personal reflection on who you are or how you look. It amounts to this: if I already have 20 blue, wool sweaters, I probably don’t need another one.
* If you think this might be fun, but are too shy or worried that I might not be interested, take a chance. In order to really create something, we have to take risks. After the day is over, if you still feel uncomfortable or shy about the process, then you don’t ever have to do it again.
