TiVo

I went to my Dad’s house last night and setup the TiVo. What pissed me off was that, once the setup was finished I was able to read the “messages” left by the TiVo to me. Sure enough, on 8/30/2004 it detected a wireless USB apapter and was happy to let me set it up. Why it refused to let me use it for guided setup, I’ll never know. Never the less, it works perfectly now, all the daily calls are going through the wireless ethernet, and it’s very fast.

I like it already. It’s very cool, very easy to use, and take 99% of the annoying things about TV and throws them out the window. I’ve already run into an issue where I wanted to record more than one thing at a time. Of course, it was easy to decide which was more important as, most of the recordings were just fluff to see the thing work, anyway. But still, I can really see the value of having two tuners, or two TiVo’s entirely.

Hopefully, when we get home tonight, there will be a nice pile of recordings waiting for us.

A question for all you TiVo users, what record quality do you generally use? I’ve only recorded one thing and it was in “High” (one notch below the highest)… and it looked great. How much worse does it get if I go lower?

Moving Day: 2004-09-12

Sunday, September 12th is our big moving day. That’s two Sunday’s from now. I’ve rented a 17′ truck for the day, which should be enough to get it all in one load. I pick up the truck at 8:00am, and we hope to get started by 9:00am. I figure if we get started at 9:00am, we should have the truck loaded by 1:00pm. Sooner, depending on how many people help (my estimates are based on me, my dad and Jess for the loading). It’ll take 30 minutes to drive, and about 2 hours to unload getting us finished around 3:30pm. Then we start unpacking.

If you want to help, let me know. We’ll have donuts and coffee around 8:30am for the early risers. Drinks and snacks through the day, and Lunch at the new place just prior to the drive to the new place. More drinks and snacks through the unloading and unpacking process, and dinner and beer around 6:00pm if anyone’s still around by then. Jess does a very good job of packing and preparing everything to be loaded quickly and easily, so the actually loading part should be pretty easy. Our apartment’s on the first floor, and we intend to secure a few parking spots nice and close to the door the evening before to make it easier. The house is two story, but there isn’t too much that has to go up the stairs so, again, it should be pretty easy.

Jess is doing a little packing this weekend, and the majority of it throughout next week. I help as little as possible, because I really hate packing and do a terrible job of it. We’re going to save all the large packing and furniture dismantling for Saturday morning and afternoon. Although we’ve probably got enough help with Jess’ work and my… supervision (that’s a good name for the guy who packs one item every hour and otherwise just yacks a bunch, huh?), if you want to help out there, let me know.
