January, 2005:

Poker Tonight

Wow. We’ve got a big group of people coming tonight.

“Justin”:http://gentlenews.com/, “John”:http://livejournal.com/users/gotardz/, “Stacey”:http://livejournal.com/users/stacey/, “Alan”:http://livejournal.com/users/spurio/, Hilary, Mike, Uncle Rob, and, of course, Jess and I.

Then, on the tentative list, we have Joe, “Laura”:http://livejournal.com/users/stick_figure/, Mike, Lisa, “Josh”:http://livejournal.com/users/xaminmo/, “Erica”:http://livejournal.com/users/razormaid/, “Brad”:http://livejournal.com/users/sn0w_cr4sh/ and “Morgan”:http://livejournal.com/users/s1m0n/.

That’s 9 confirmed and 17 possible.

If we end up with 9, it’ll be a good size for a nice big game. And, if we end up with all 17, we’ll have enough for a full tournament of no-limit hold ‘em with three tables.

The event starts at 8pm. We’ll start playing sometime between then and 9pm. Late comers are welcome to show anytime before 11pm. You can show up later than that, but I can’t say for sure that anyone will have any money left by then.

It’s going to be fun.

Hey Justin, make sure you bring the snacks and whatnot that are currently at your place. And give me a call if I need to get to the store and buy more.

Distractions

One of my resolutions for this year is to Quit Smoking. Yeah, lofty goal, I know. At any rate, boredom is one of the biggest things that causes me to smoke. So, I’ve set up a repository where you, my faithful and generous readers, can contribute distractions to the cause.

It’s easy. You simply send an email to *distractions [AT] revjim [DOT] net*. Then, whenever I’m in need of a distration, I can browse through those things you’ve sent in and, hopefully, kill enough time to get me back on track.

If you’d like, you can view the “list of current distractions”:http://revjim.net/page/distractions/ to determine whether I’m need of anything new (generally speaking, I am. So, if in doubt, send away).

So, what should you send? Anything really. Silly websites, funny jokes, dirty pictures, essays on religion, a detailed account of your last sexual encounter, your thoughts on quantum physics, a online game that you enjoy, a picture of you in a lewd or compromising situation…. really… anything goes.

And thanks in advance for humoring me.

Six Apart acquires Danga (LiveJournal)

“It”:http://revjim.net/item/10227/ is “official”:http://www.livejournal.com/users/news/82926.html.

Congratulations to “SixApart”:http://sixapart.com/, “LiveJournal”:http://livejournal.com/ and, of course, “Mr. BradFitz himself”:http://livejournal.com/users/brad/.

Once again I find myself quite jealous of Brad. Not only is he doing what he loves to do with a community that he loves to work with using technology that he enjoys working, but he’s making a *huge* difference in the world of online communications, a world that I’d like to leave my own mark on. And, to top it all off, he gets to live/work in San Francisco, one of my favorite cities.

So, once again, congratulations, Brad. I look forward to seeing what LiveJournal, TypePad, and MovableType have in store for the world this year.

Liquor in the front, poker in the rear

Don’t forget. Another poker game. This Saturday. 8pm. My Place. Bring lots of money or the nice looking underwear.

RSVP. Now!

I think it’s an interesting prospect for both parties involved.

the average Canadian is busy dogsledding?

Please someone tell me that “this”:http://mediamatters.org/items/200412010011 (excerpts from commentary regarding Canada by Ann Coulter and Tucker Carlson) isn’t the common line of thought that goes through the minds of right-winged radicals when they think of Canada.

bq. COULTER: They better hope the United States doesn’t roll over one night and crush them. They are lucky we allow them to exist on the same continent.

bq. COULTER: We could have taken them [Canada] over so easily.

bq. COULTER: We like the English-speaking Canadians.

bq. CARLSON: Without the U.S., Canada is essentially Honduras, but colder and much less interesting.

bq. CARLSON: Canada needs the United States. The United States does not need Canada.

bq. CARLSON: … the average Canadian is busy dogsledding.

While I respect their right to an opinion, it makes me cringe to think that there may actually be *more* Americans that feel this way.

insane?

I’ve been told that one of the signs of an insane individual is someone who continues to perform the same action while expecting a different result. I do this on just about every work day.

We have a soda machine (that’s a “Coke Machine” for my fellow Texans). It takes dollar bills, sometimes. I feed it my dollar. It spits it back out. I feed it my dollar again, in the exact same fashion as before, it spits it back out. I feed it again. It spits it back out, again. Eventually, usually, it gives in to my persistence and takes my dollar.

This morning’s soda took 11 attempts. I think that’s a record. I should keep track of these things.

Ani Difranco and Knuckle Down

I wasn’t all that impressed with Ani’s last album. But her new one, Knuckle Down, seems quite good. I’m still making my way through the first run of it, but I’m enjoying it quite a bit.

oops…

I got in a car accident yesterday morning. A 3-MPH rear-ender at Colorado and Loop 288 in Denton. My fault. The girl I hit was a little shaken up, but, no one was hurt and vehicle damage was minimal. Jess was pretty freaked out, having never been in an accident before. But, I’m grateful, as it could have been much worse. I look forward to seeing just how much my insurance company is going to rape me after this. And I just recently got my last accident to fall off my record. Ugh. Two more years. Weeee!
