really bad design

Whoever invented the idea the smoke detectors would beep once every couple of minutes to let you know that their batteries were getting low was an absolute moron. We have no less than 7 smoke alarms in our house. And that single, high-pitched, echoing beep is so quick that, when it sounds, it’s nearly impossible to determine its origin. So you stand there for a couple of minutes and wait for the next beep, only to make another small adjustment in direction. You finally get to it, take it down, and yank the batteries when you hear another beep. What? Are there TWO out, or was THIS just not the ONE?

Ugh.

Hey guys!? What about a beep, and then a bright, *obvious* blinking light that I can look at and say, “Hmmm. I do believe this smoke detector needs new batteries.”?

One time, I took one down, replaced the battery, and crammed it in a cupboard because I didn’t want to get the ladder just then. Well, a month went by and another alarm was out. We hunted the house for what seemed like an hour until I realized it was the one I had put in the cupboard. Then I had to remember which cupboard.
