Ybor City
Tampa, FL

—-

After all the sangria I drank, I’m surprised I was even able to walk, let alone walk and photograph at the same time.

I took quite a few that I like. However, since it was after dark, most of them are blurrier or grainier than I’d like. I think this one turned out very well, though.

Your comments and suggestions are appreciated, as always.

I took this from the balcony of my hotel room a few hours ago. I’m really wanting to go out for some street photography tonight, but, I think one more night of good rest is probably a good idea.

550?

Everything out here seems extravagant, and larger than life, and over done. It’s like being trapped in an 80s rock world. It’s Jimmy Buffet heaven.

I had hoped to have quite a few shots of Tampa by now. The truth is, I haven’t even taken one. Hopefully, I’ll correct that tomorrow.

I took this image back on the Public Transportation Adventure that Jess and I took. It’s a bit journalistic in nature but I like it. This kid with the sunglasses was adorable.

This is, hopefully, one of many more experimental images to come. Sometimes it’s difficult to force my mind outside of that “subject” mentality and focus more on shape, color and mood. These images are an attempt to learn to selectively focus my mind.

I like the chaos this presents. Yet, even in that chaos there is this unmistakable, repeating sense of order.

Despite what your eyes may tell you, this image has not been “photoshopped” any more than the usual curves, cropping and color. However, it looks fake and, almost, painted.

High grain, slight overexposure, and slightly out of focus will get you this effect, if you ever want to try it yourself.

This didn’t come out as well as I had hoped, but I still like it. I’ve decided to publish it mostly because, often I am asked “what, exactly, are you taking a picture OF?”. I was asked that very question when I took this image so I figured this image will explain it much better than my words ever could.

This is one of those shots that every photographer shooting digital (and a lot of them shooting film) takes every now and then. It works like this.

You’re walking around, not seeing anything particularly exciting but, eh, whatever. Every now and then you bring your eye to the viewfinder and press the release just for fun. Then, one time you look into the viewfinder, push the release and then do a double take. “Woah! I think that one was actually good!”. If you’re shooting film, you put the camera up to your eye and shoot a few more more directed more purposeful shots to make sure you got it. If you’re shooting digital you pull it up on the LCD to see if it was what you thought it was. In this case, it was. I shot a few more anyway, just in case.

I like the feel of this. Sure it isn’t perfect.. but that’s part of it’s appeal. The horizon is crooked, but the trees are straight. the composition is a bit odd, and the trees in the background interfere with the trees that are subjects, a bit. But, when your eyes follow those leaves down to those trunks it all works itself out.

mixing it up… a lot

Here’s what I’m going to do…

# Photography will go to “Flickr”:http://flickr.com/ because I enjoy the community it offers.
# Until Flickr gets a more blog-like interface for displaying photos, I’ll still post photographs to “revjim.net”:http://revjim.net/ from Flickr along with commentary.
# Tips and tricks on Photography will go to “revjim.net”:http://revjim.net/.
# Photo of the Day entries will go to “revjim.net”:http://revjim.net/ (if I ever have another one).
# Crush of the Week entries will go to “revjim.net”:http://revjim.net/ (if I ever have another one).
# Technical notes and commentary will go to “revjim.net”:http://revjim.net/.
# News and Politics will go to “revjim.net”:http://revjim.net/.
# Positive life updates will go to “LiveJournal”:http://livejournal.com because I enjoy the community.
# Mentions of Local Events that you might be invited to will go to “LiveJournal”:http://livejournal.com.
# Negative life updates will go to “LiveJournal”:http://livejournal.com but will be filtered from the public view.
# Most deep introspection, talks about sexuality, or venting issues of personal turmoil will go to “LiveJournal”:http://livejournal.com because of the security and community, however, they will be filtered from the public view.
# Positive talk about work will go to “LiveJournal”:http://livejournal.com (revjim.net if it is Technical in nature).
# Negative talk about work will go to “LiveJournal”:http://livejournal.com and will be filtered from the public view.
# Interesting links will go to “del.icio.us”:http://del.icio.us/ because of the community and ease of use.

“revjim.net”:http://revjim.net/ may be altered or updated to break its various materials into various sections of the site (photography here, technical stuff there, etc).

“revjim.net”:http://revjim.net/ may also be altered to include snippets of other information from various sources, to serve as a common place to funnel all data published by yours truly.

In some cases, the filtered entries made to “LiveJournal”:http://livejournal.com will also be posted publically on other websites or under other “LiveJournal”:http://livejournal.com user names. This is to be a part of a larger community while still retaining an anonymous nature.

Items posted on “revjim.net”:http://revjim.net/, including images from “Flickr”:http://flickr.com/, will still be cross posted to “LiveJournal”:http://livejournal.com/ for the time being. They may cease at any time, in which case, you will be notified of alternate methods of keeping up with that content.

Links to pages and images will be broken with reckless abandon. I just don’t care about it any more.

In the end, this is what I will have:

# A website, “revjim.net”:http://revjim.net/, that is both family and work friendly. This doesn’t mean there will not be unsafe words, topics, or photographs posted there, but simply that those things are things I do not mind my co-workers or family to read.
# An account at “Flickr”:http://flickr.com/ under the user name “revjim”:http://flickr.com/people/revjim/ that will hold my current photographs as well as archives of my older photography. “photos.revjim.net”:http://photos.revjim.net/ will be brought down once the data is moved from it to Flickr. Images here will be considered safe to be associated to me by my family and co-workers.
# An account at “LiveJournal”:http://livejournal.com under the user name “revjim”:http://revjim.livejournal.com/ that will hold updates to my life, silly memes, and announcements of local events. Some information there will be public. Other information will be private. It will be safe to associate that account to me by my family and co-workers.
# An account at “del.icio.us”:http://del.icio.us/ under the user name “revjim”:http://del.icio.us/revjim/ that will hold various links, both technical and personal. All of these links will be safe to associate to me by my family and co-workers.
# Various other “LiveJournal”:http://livejournal.com accounts, “Flickr”:http://flickr.com/ accounts, “del.icio.us”:http://del.icio.us/ accounts, and websites that will contain information that is *not* safe to associate to me by my family and co-workers. In some cases, it may not even be safe for all of my friends. Some of this information will be made available as filtered information in “LiveJournal”:http://livejournal.com under the user name “revjim”:http://revjim.livejournal.com/.

Through this hodgepodge of software and syndication, I hope to have all information safe to identify to me by anyone mentioned, or linked to on revjim.net. Additionally, I hope to have it available in LiveJournal somehow. Further more, I hope to have all information only safe for select individuals to identify to me available in LiveJournal somehow, as filtered content.

It’s easier than it sounds. Moving stuff around is a bit harder, but not so bad when you stop caring about broken links.

This is effective immediately.

Let me know if you have any questions.
