Jonathan Coulton: Geek Folk for all of us

Looking back through the “revjim.net” archives I realize now that, while I did add a “bookmark”:http://del.icio.us/url/764944b253db7c72414e5ee3276b5b10 to this particular individual back in October of 2004, and mentioned him in a “comment”:http://revjim.net/comments/10329/#comment6951 last April, I never gave him the full write up he deserves.

I’m talking about “Jonathan Coulton”:http://www.jonathancoulton.com/. Last May (and April and June, for that matter) I annoyed my dear wife with the near-constant repeat of his song “The First of May”:http://www.jonathancoulton.com/lyrics/first-of-may (“mp3″:http://www.jonathancoulton.com/music/Jonathan%20Coulton%20-%20First%20of%20May.mp3). When I wasn’t playing it, I was singing it.

A few weekends ago, while on the way to “Palo Duro Canyon”:http://www.livejournal.com/users/revjim/865728.html, “Jess”:http://livejournal.com/users/sivatonight/, “Mike”:http://livejournal.com/users/mw/ and I heard a song about “Ikea”:http://www.jonathancoulton.com/lyrics/ikea (“mp3″:http://www.jonathancoulton.com/music/Jonathan%20Coulton%20-%20Ikea.mp3) being played by some university radio station in Amarillo. I absolutely loved it but it wasn’t until today that I put two and two together and realized that it was being sung by none other than Johnny C himself.

Recently, the big JC has seen “quite a bit of publicity”:http://www.jonathancoulton.com/2005/10/18/wowie-zowie/ with his folk cover of “Baby Got Back”:http://www.jonathancoulton.com/2005/10/14/thing-a-week-5-baby-got-back/. Call it a rip off of the Gourds’ “Gin and Juice” or Dynamite Hack’s “The Boys in the Hood” if you want, but there’s no denying it’s damn good music and quite funny to boot.

This “Baby Got Back” cover is part of Jonathan’s “Thing a Week”:http://www.jonathancoulton.com/category/thing-a-week/ which is something you should certainly add to your feed readers if not his entire site. Another worthy mention from Jonathan’s “Thing A Week” is “W’s Duty”:http://www.jonathancoulton.com/2005/09/30/thing-a-week-3-ws-duty/ which will quickly satisfy the childish interest in bathroom humor inside us all.

All of “Jonathan’s music”:http://www.jonathancoulton.com/songs/ is under Creative Commons license which means he doesn’t get paid a penny unless you give from the bottom of your hearts. So, if you enjoy his music, “toss him a buck or two”:https://www.paypal.com/xclick/business=jc%40jonathancoulton%2ecom&no_shipping=0&no_note=1&tax=0&currency_code=USD as I’ve done in the past and will certainly do again in the future. If every one of you that enjoys any of this music threw $1 his way, he’d have quite a bit of money.

Enjoy!

Rails 1.0 RC1 (aka 0.14.0) Released

Ladies and Gentlemen, boy and girls, the moment you’ve all been waiting for. “Rails”:http://www.rubyonrails.com/ has released it’s first candidate (RC1) for Rails 1.0 and it’s “available”:http://encytemedia.com/blog/articles/2005/10/16/rails-1-0-rc-1-released now!

“Improvements”:http://greymatter.usc.edu/blog/articles/2005/10/16/what-s-new-in-rails-1-0 over 0.13.1 include:
* Rails::Initializer: Should make environment.rb a bit cleaner.
* db/schema.rb: Will make getting updated db schema easier
* Better FCGI: Scripts to help start and stop applications served with FastCGI putting more distance between the server (Apache2) and the application.
* SwitchTower: deployment
* Plugins: Extend the base Rails quickly and easily.
* Speed: A 2x improvement. A 4x gain with special upgrades.

I have yet to try it being in a very “production” level state right now. But, as soon as things calm down a little, you can be sure I will. Get it while it’s hot

New Photos for Sale: 2005-10-17

I’ve put up four more photographs for sale.

reach inside me

These will be offered for the next few weeks.

Last week’s orders will be shipping tomorrow, so be on the lookout. :)

Thanks again for your kindness and support. I’ve even received orders from friends of friends, which makes me really happy. I am so touched and honored that you would recommend my work to your family and friends. I’ve got a few little gifts that I’ll be sending, just to say thank you for recommending my work. You know who you are. :)

My camera was broken this past weekend and it will be a few weeks before it can be repaired so, ou may not see much in the way of new work from me over the next few weeks. Hopefully, I’ll use this time to work on a more proper ordering system.

Photography: new pricing and shipping

Now that I’m really starting to figure out what costs are involved and how much overhead I need to make in order to at least begin to recoup costs I’ve been able to reduce the prices on the prints I’m offering. In some cases, it’s a drastic change, in others, it’s not as much. Either way, I hope it makes my art that much more affordable and that much more available to you all.

This does mean that those of you who bought prints in the last orders paid a bit more than the current prices. You all now have credit at Jim Reverend Photography. Email me and let me know what you’d like with your credit and I’ll get it in the next order. If there’s any substantial balance due I’ll email you with a method to send the difference.

If this doesn’t work out as planned then I’ll raise the prices again next week.

Also, though I have yet to get a report of a damaged print, the state that the packaging is left in causes me great concern. However, I’m trying to keep costs down so another shipping method is not really an option. Therefore, I have altered my packaging a bit, instead. I will be ordering card board inserts to keep the packaging rigid. It’ll make the envelopes a lot more difficult to bend. Additionally, I will be marking the outside of the packaging to indicate that photographs are inside which will hopefully cause the USPS to take pity on me. Together, hopefully, these measures will keep them in a better state. If not, then FedEx Ground seems to be the next best option. However, the print prices will go up by $5 or more if I have to do that, so let’s hope I don’t.

Now… go pimp me out.

(I think I’m going to start a site for “photography” only and get it out of here. Makes it easier to have a place to send people. What do you think?)

New Photos For Sale

As I said before, I’m changing the way that I sell prints a little bit. Instead of having a large array of images to choose from, I’m reducing what’s available to special packages, a few older images, and recent work. This allows me to plan ahead, reduce the exposure to some images, and order prints in bulk. The older images will cycle as I see fit, though on a fairly regular basis. The newer images will be replaced as well, once every week or two. Every couple of weeks, as I add new images to the sale list, I’ll mention them in an update like this one.

thanks for waiting

Remember, these will only be on sale for a few weeks. So, if you want one, “order now”:http://revjim.net/pages/photosforsale/. In the future, they may be sold in a special package or as a limited edition, but not like this or at these prices.

This is the same image as “black with soft trim”:http://flickr.com/photos/revjim/51766395/. Only, in this case, I’m showing just a little more of her face and I think that adds a lot.

Easily one of the hottest shoots I’ve ever done. I had a hard time maintaining concentration and, because of that, screwed up more things than I care to enumerate. Regardless, I got quite a few images that I really like and I learned a lot about the use of reflectors as well as an important lesson regarding maintaining my concentration.
