Dear GMail

Dear GMail,

I left my dear IMAP for you. I walked out on a 7+ year relationship for you — because of your promises of freedom and ease of use and, hey, let's face it, you're younger and sexier than IMAP is these days. But, as we've been together for a while now, there are a few things about you that I have a hard time with. I've asked nicely time and time again, and you keep promising me you'll change, but you haven't. So here they are again, for the last time.

Why, oh why, can't I sort my mail with UNREAD mail on top, followed by the remaining mail from oldest to newest? This doesn't have to be the default, but I'd really like to see it as an option. That's how most people process mail anyway. I certainly don't need to see my newest mail first, as that's not the way most people handle the requests they might get in email.

Also, I *still* can't arrange conversations in a manner that is pleasing to me. I'm a programmer, so I have a very good idea about how hard it would be to allow me to associate a message with a particular conversation, or remove a particular message from another conversation. This is especially annoying when your SPAM checker fails to determine a piece of SPAM which is then associated as part of an actual conversation I intend to save. The only course of action is to delete the messages I wish to save, mark the SPAM as SPAM, and then undelete the messages. Quite annoying, GMail.

And, why do you INSIST on putting my @gmail.com address in a location at which common mail clients will see it, accept it, digest it, and, in some cases, reply to it? If I'm using an alternate address, please keep @gmail.com usage to a MINIMUM.

-While you're at it, if a message was addressed To (or Cc) ME@ME.COM and I have an alternate sending address of ME@ME.COM established in my settings, then when I choose to reply or forward, please default the from address to ME@ME.COM. That just makes sense, don't you think? I'm not asking for rocket science, sweetie, just a little understanding.- (As CPM pointed out, this has been done. YAY!)

I'm very close to giving up on you, dear GMail, and going back to my tried and true, IMAP. Your empty promises and sexy smile only go so far. I love you, baby, but, I just can't handle this any more. Straighten up soon or I'm walking out on you. I don't want to, but you've given me no choice.

Love,
Jim Reverend
