thought results in change

I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about photography, art, my business, and my happiness lately. As a result of this thought, there are a few business changes I’m considering and a few more that have already been made.

I’m considering starting a trend where I edit fthe photographs *with* the model after the shoot. If you’d be interested in trying this, let me know. I think it might be beneficial for several reasons. While I *always* edit my paid sessions in a *very* timely fashion, I’m a bit more lax about my test sessions. I edit what I really like, and the others just… wait. Editing the images with the model will not only give me valuable feedback about each image *before* I waste my time editing something the model doesn’t really like and I’m not going to use, but it will also ensure that I schedule time to get them done. If you’d be interested in being my guinea pig for this process, let me know.

Also, due to some complications that need not be explained right now, I may begin charging a small sitting fee even for my test sessions (and I’ll include some prints in exchange). It’s not something I *want* to do, but it may be needed. It won’t be more than $25 or so, and there will be some exceptions but, for the most part, it will apply. So, if you want to work with me while it’s still free, you may want to let me know now.

Starting now, I’m only taking two sessions a week, one during the week, and one over the weekend. Exceptions can be made, of course — as I’m going to want to get into projects that really excite me as soon as possible — but this is the general rule. So, my time’s become a bit more limited. This is all the more reason to *hurry up and email me*.

I’ve rethought my pricing entirely. As a result of this, I’ve added a few new product options for purchasing my work and I’ve lowered my prices significantly. I was a bit leary about doing this as I know that lowering my prices can make my work seem cheap and without value. However, having my prices all over the board doesn’t really create any sense of value either and it isn’t fair to my patrons. So, unless I manage to find a much less expensive supplier of the materials and services I use to produce my prints, the prices I have now (“sample image”:http://djamesphoto.com/image/view/115912996/ with prices and products) are the lowest I will ever sell them (outside of clearence sales and special promotions). As supply, demand, popularity, free time, and other conditions dictate, these prices will go up in the future. However, they will not be reduced.

I’ve divided my products into two sections, regular prints — machine titled, unnumbered, unsigned — and collector’s editions — hand signed, titled, and numbered, and cautiously cared for by me every step of the way. I hope this will satisfy all of my patrons and allow me to create value in my images and yet still allow my art to reach as many people as possible. So take a look at my “new prices”:http://djamesphoto.com/image/view/115912996/ and then look at my “body of work for sale”:http://flickr.com/search/?q=forsale&w=37996577120%40N01&m=tags&s=int&z=t
and see if you can’t find something that interests you.

I’ve also started “a sellers account on Etsy”:http://danieljames.etsy.com/. Feel free to look at my work there and, if you have an account there, please add me and my images to your favorites so that others can see my work too.

As always, I’m interested in your feedback.

on the water at dawn

The canoeing trip I took with my dad Yesterday was amazing. I woke up around 3am, left at my house at 4am, and met him there around 5am. We were on the water by 6:15am and watched the sun come up from our canoe. It was very beautiful.

There was a beaver on the river that was a bit shy at first but eventually let us get to within 15 feet of him as he floated in the water eating some kind of plant life. I’ve never been more in awe in my entire life. I remember exactly where we were and I intend to go back one morning and and look for him again. I didn’t get any pictures, though. It was too dark and the lens I have just doesn’t cut it. “Donate”:http://revjim.net/donations/ some money or “buy a print”:http://flickr.com/search/?q=forsale&w=37996577120%40N01&m=tags&s=int&z=t so I can buy “the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8″:http://www.adorama.com/SG70200DGNKA.html?kbid=62466

Due to misnavigating the canoe (I was in front trying to steer (which is very hard to do) while my dad has his camera out in the back) I nearly kissed a snake. I’m grateful he wasn’t coiled up or he could have easily struck. He was a beautiful snake though.

We also saw many water birds including at least 3 families of ducks. Something bumped the bottom of our canoe more than once. We weren’t quite sure what.

The worst part was at the end where our intended method of getting out of the water failed when we discovered that the road we ended to take didn’t go all the way through. At one point, my dad and broke up — him in the canoe and me on foot — to find a way home. I ventured into some quicksand mud that had me afraid for my life. I was in past my knees, was sinking further with each foot, had lost both of my shoes, and was afraid that my cell phone wouldn’t work covered in mud. Fortunately, I got out, recovered both of my shoes, and my cell phone still worked, but I was very afraid.

Getting stuck wasn’t all bad, though. I did see these itsy-bitsy teeny-tiny frogs, about the size of my fingernail. Due to the circumstances at the time, I don’t have any photographic evidence of this but, I assure you, they were quite small and quite cute. I’m sure they also gave me leprosy or something.

After eventually finding a way home, my dad stayed with the canoe and I walked to the truck and then brought it to the nearest location, about 1/4 mile away. Then we walked the 80 pound canoe and at least twice that much weight in camera gear and other belongings to the truck. I don’t know how you “real canoers”:http://kerplunk101.livejournal.com/ do this on a regular basis, but, I’d sure like to know a trick or two.

Are there any other canoers out there who would like to go on a two day trip? I’d love to set up a weekend for this on a secluded river somewhere. Email me, okay?

*Tuesday*

We had a fun “show”:http://gentlenews.com/theshow/ and used some fun new software that makes having guests even easier. If you have a microphone and earphones at home, a decent Internet connection, and would like to be a guest on the show, please let me know. Of course, you can always come into the studio as well.

*Wednesday*

I had a hot photo session. Very hot. I think I took one of my most favorite images ever. I’m really starting to get into the groove of working with people. Who’s next?

*Yesterday*

I took the day off work and went canoeing with my dad. The short version is, I got up very early, had a great time, and left very tired.

After finally getting to my dad’s house and scraping as much mud off of me as possible, my dad and I went out for lunch. Then I headed home, took a shower, and slept for 30 minutes. Then Jess got home from work and we got ready to meet some friends for dinner at Gloria’s in Addison. After dinner, we had ice cream, then came home and promptly crawled in bed. Asleep by 9:30pm? You betcha!

I also learned that I misplaced my credit card, it was then stolen, and used several times in Richardson and Dallas. So we called the bank to cancel the card, get the money refunded, and have a new card issued. Bastards. I kinda want to pull a Monica (from friends) and find this person some how. Grrr.

*Today*

I’m meeting a friend for lunch today in Dallas at 12pm. Then tonight, Jess and I are going to some friends’ house to have dinner, drink a lot, and play poker. “D-Bone”:http://revjim.net/2006/05/30/d-bone/ is coming out to play. Wooo! Good times.

*Tomorrow*

Unless my dad calls me today to tell me that we’re leaving VERY early in the morning to head for the mountains and not coming back until Sunday, I’ll be out near Lake Texoma tomorrow morning photographing. Tomorrow evening we’ve got swimming and dinner plans with some friends. You can come too, if you want.

*Beyond*

Father’s Day photography with Dad, Mom and Jess. Photo session on Wednesday. Looking for something to do on Saturday while Jess is baby sitting. My birthday’s coming up. Wooo!

This vulture stood guard at the entrance to a large barn. Its mate was on the roof above. Taken at Penn Farm inside Cedar Hill State Park near Cedar Hill, TX.
