Ojinaga bound
August 12th, 2006Yesterday, I took what will most likely amount to 3 of my best nature photographs ever. I actually said to Jess, "I don't know if I'm ever going to get off this moutain because every time I make the next wind I see yet another photograph I have to take."
This morning I'll be catching the sunrise in the Davis Mountains. Iin a mountain region, photographing during sunrise is much different. In flat areas during a sunrise you normally point your camera east, toward the sun. In a mountain region this often means you'll point your camera west to catch the sun as it pokes up between the mountain peek for the first time.
Some guy yelled at me for taking a picture of his old, messy, stinky, dilapadated house. What seems like at least 5 minutes after I took it, he hollered to me. If I had been actually walking I'd have been long gone but, because I was taking photographs, I hadn't gotten very far. He said, "Hey, I saw you taking pictures of my house," in an angry tone. "Which house is yours?" I reponded. "That one," he said, pointing. "Are you just a photographer or what?" Let's see: camera: check, bulky backpack: check, taking pictures, check. "Yup," I said. Somehow, that satisfied his anger, though I'm not sure what he was worried I was doing.
After the sunrise I'll have breakfast in Marfa, then on to Presidio and into Ojinaga, Mexico for a few hours. Ojinaga is supposedly Mexico's least spoiled border town. I'm not sure how far I'll make it with rusty spanish and no guide, but, I'll try.
I'll be booking a hotel in Terilinguas this evening if I can find a hotel there that doesn't give me or my wallet the twitches.
I'll get some photographs around sunset in Big Bend National Park and then head back to my hotel.
I've searched the Internet far and wide for things to do and see in Ojinaga. If you have any advice or recommendations, text me at "pager AT revjim DOT net".
