As it is I almost never remember to update my Status on GAIM and that is something I use constantly. I don't do text messages (I feel that if I am by a computer I can use IM and if I am not then I'll just call you), and I can't think of any status that my friends (or even my wife) might set that I would want an IM sent to me about. If something is going on they know how to contact me. As for things like news, I have RSS feeds from Blogs and News Sources I care to read. So frankly, it just seemed to me like another distraction that would only provide minutia that isn't significant enough to warrant a blog post, IM, or phone call.
