Fixing Things

My camera is back from Nikon Repair. In case you’re wondering how long it takes, it took 10 days from when I approved the cost to the camera arriving on my doorstep. It took about 4 days from the time I shipped it to their estimate. So, all-in-all, about 2 weeks. Not bad, really.

My media center PC is currently at the Acer repair center. We’ll see how well that goes. I mailed it on June 11th. I got notification that they received it on June 13th. I’m pretty sure it’s just a bad power supply. It’s sad thought that it took 15 email exchanges for them to agree to repair it and only after they suggested I charge the battery which, being a desktop and not a notebook, it doesn’t have. Whatever.

Buying Things

I still want a new bag. A “murse”, if you will. Something that’ll hold diapers and wipes, a sippy cup, a water bottle, a dSLR and a lens, some important papers, a changes of clothes, a book to read, a handful of personal items, and a laptop. Rarely will it need to hold all of that at once. But, it should be able to once in a while. It should be interesting to look at, have lots of pockets, have a durable base, and come in a color other than black. Ideally it would be made out of a more natural material that could then be waterproofed. Ideally it’d also cost less than $100. If you know where to find such an item, please leave a comment. I’ve looked everywhere.

I’ve spent enough time at the pool so far this year that I’m thinking an underwater point-and-shoot digital camera would be a good idea. I have a waterproof bag that I can stuff my dSLR in to. But, all told, it doesn’t work very well. It keeps the camera quite dry, which is the most important part. But the lens port constantly gets in the way of the shot making it very difficult to use and often resulting in bad images. I wish I could attach the lens port to the front of the lens in use. Then it would take care of itself. You hear that, DiCAPac?!

If I get a underwater point-and-shoot I’ll actually just buy a regular, pocket sized camera and then a hard-case underwater housing for it. That way I’ll have one of each for only a little more than what I’d pay for just an underwater camera. See, I’m smart that way. I’m considering the Canon SD1200 because it’s small, inexpensive, and the underwater housing for it is less than $200. But I’d really prefer to have manual exposure available, just in case. Any ideas/suggestions?

To round up the list of things I want to buy, I’m also considering an iPod Touch and a Mac Mini. The original iPhone and Touch could not do what I wanted them to do because they couldn’t do more than one thing at a time. The new iPhone OS 3.0 makes this possible with the Notification API. So, there are quite a few apps I’d like to write and see how well they do. With these two things I should be able to get started.

I’d get an iPhone 3Gs, but AT&T offers bad service, is slow to implement new features, and regularly indicates that they don’t put their customers first. I’d really rather not tie myself to paying them $100/mo for the next two years. That’s just silly. So, iPod Touch it is.

Plans

This weekend is Celeste’s birthday party. There will be roughly 15 kids and 15 adults there. I’m actually a little scared at how it’s all going to turn out but I’m trying to let someone else (my mom in this case) handle something for once and just not worry about it. With my personality, that’s a lot harder than it should be.

Other than that, this week is pretty low key. I’ll probably take Celeste swimming on Wednesday night and again on Friday night because why not? She loves it and so do I. I hope to spend Tuesday catching up on housework and chores and such and maybe spend some time out with friends or at a coffee house reading and writing on Thursday.

An Important Message

I definitely recommend a P&S w/ housing for underwater photography because of the compact size, relatively low cost, less hassel (than DSLR+lenses+flash, etc), and less worry about flooding the housing and ruining thousands of dollars of equipment.

However, I would recommend something with good sensitivity / high ISO. Manual control is nice but easy exposure compensation is the most important. Flash is critical. Flash will reveal the awesome colors that are filtered out as sunlight passes through 60 feet of blue-ish water. The flash is what will make your photos awesome or suck. Back scatter is a big issue, so you may want to look at external flash options with some sort of optical trigger. I don't know what's available in this arena, but conceptually it's fairly low-tech so I don't see a big problem. A quick focus / shutter release is also important when you're trying to get a good shot of moving subjects (e.g., fish). Without doing any research, I think I'd be looking at the Canon G series. Also, a good movie mode is *really* nice…

I'm happy to chat more about this sometime. I love underwater photography but don't think I'll ever go hard-core with it because I only like to dive occasionally.

My wet photography needs are really more centered around shallow water, rain, and sprinkler applications than they are dive-centric shooting. And, more family/snapshot oriented photography then anything artsy or commercial. However, I'm certainly not against being prepared for all things.

A Canon G10 is $500. The housing is roughly the same as the one for the SD1200. All together a G10 setup would cost twice as much as the SD1200 setup. But, based on the specs and some reviews, it would make far better images as well. The G10 would easily replace my use of the S5IS, so I could sell that to recover some of the extra cost.

I think you're on to something here.

  • Jonathan

Brilliant. I didn't even think of sprinkler/pool/etc, but that's probably 99% of your usage with this. G10 also lets you add a flashgun for if you want nice photos in a relatively small package (e.g., traveling light). The SX-1 is nice also. If you get a compact P&S, I highly recommend something with a 28mm effective range at the wide end. Also, I think Canon has a water resistant camera, but… eh…

Also, hello SX200IS! You look new and hawt on the surface! And Mr. SD780IS- you're quite the sexy lady killer! Too bad you're all show and no blow. (whatever blow means).

Daniel, we still have the housing for the A80… we're more than willing to give you a very good deal on it. And I prefer talking about stuff like this in person, but I could give you a rundown of why you should find yourself an A80 and use the housing we already have. It's a bargain, essentially. I know what your needs are and I know this'll satisfy them as much or more than buying a new camera and housing.

The SX-1 is nice but also very similar to my S5IS. I only did a quick search but, just like the S5IS, there are no “less expensive” underwater housings available for it.

The SX200IS is lot like the SX110IS, which is a great camera but, again the issue with finding a underwater housing. Smaller than the SX-1, too.

The specs on the SD780IS are, like you said, without any real “blow”. The SD1200 is cheaper, lighter, smaller, and even has a slightly faster lens. Doesn't really make sense to go this route, I don't think.

All told, it seems like the G10 is the best bet here. And the Powershot G series has always seen good reviews for quality. So I imagine the G10 will continue that reputation.

Any other contenders you can think of, or is it G10 vs SD1200?

Disqus and Facebook integration is a bit… wonky sometimes. You can be logged in multiple ways and certain ones take precedence. In this case, you're logged in via Facebook Connect, but also as a “unregistered” (therefore Guest) Disqus user. You get the MOST features if you log in to Disqus. Except, for some reason, all the Facebook functionality goes away when you do. Silly, really.

I have a Canon Powershot A80 in a drawer somewhere. I had considered looking for a housing for it and going that route. It's still an option, really, I just didn't want to spend money on the housing for a camera as old as the A80. However, if you've got one you'd sell me used, that might be the best way to go, 3MP be damned.

  • brush

    It was 4MP, actually.

We can't get much for the housing if we put it on eBay – since it's used and for a specific camera – and so few people want underwater housings. If you don't take it off our hands, it'll continue to sit in OUR drawer, unused and sad. :(

I just really recommend you put your monies elsewhere. You could end up spending up to $1G just to take pics of C by the pool. And believe me, I've taken pics of kids in the pool (underwater) and it ain't worth $1G.

I'll pull my A80 out of the drawer tonight and make sure it still
works. Because it's been in that drawer for quite a while and we say
what happened to my D70 in the same situation. It no worky. If it does
work, then we may be on to something here.

I was looking forward to having a small point and shoot for quick
stuff at the park/mall/parties/etc instead of lugging around my dSLR.
(The S5IS is just a little too big/cumbersome for this, though I've
certainly given it a good try.) But if this just makes more sense all
around, then maybe it's the best bet.

I've taken pics of Celeste underwater in the pool and bathtub using my
dSLR and the housing I have for it and it was TOTALLY worth it,
despite all the non-sense I had to deal with to make it work. The
pictures were so precious and I had so much fun doing it.

Just remembered I gave my A80 to my mom the last time she was here because she didn't have a digital camera at all.

Hrm. That was a really good idea.
